DIY Halloween | Toddler Ghost Costume

This entire costume can be made for less than $10, and in one hour.

Calling all tired parents who are running out of time to get your child a Halloween costume!

When was son was 3 years old, he wanted to be something spooky for Halloween, but nothing at the store interested him. Halloween weather in Canada can be a toss up, and that year it was particularly cold, so I decided to make him a warm and cozy ghost costume.

My mom made a lot of my costumes when I was a kid, and there is something so fun and nostalgic about it. This is an incredibly easy DIY that can be done in an hour. This costume is also carseat safe (straps beneath costume), as it acts like a car seat poncho.

I chose to hand sew the face, but it could easily be glued instead.

THE SUPPLIES

  • 1 Small White Fleece Throw Blanket, or Fabric. (Most dollar stores carry cheap throw blankets)

  • Black Felt

  • Needle & Thread or Fabric Glue / Hot Glue

  • Scissors

We added a black hat to match. The knotted bottom makes for a really cute ghosty look!

THE PROCESS

  • Fold the blanket or fabric in half to find the centre

  • Cut a small hole for their head. Start small, you can always make it bigger later

  • Cut 1 inch strips of fabric along entire outline of blanket and knot them, similar to making a tie blanket

  • Cut out ghost face shapes from black felt

  • Sew or glue ghost face onto front of costume

You can make it as simple or fancy as you want!

If ghosts aren’t your thing, this could easily be made into a jack-o-lantern, witch, Frankenstein, bat, etc!
